Worrigee resident Max Zalakos has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Nowra Yellow Pages® and White Pages® book which will be distributed throughout Nowra, Batemans Bay, Ulladulla, Narooma from 11 June 2011.

Each year, Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages®, recognises the contribution of local residents in the community by featuring them on the cover of its books.

The theme for this year’s covers, Australians Creating a Better Future, recognises people throughout Australia who have made a positive contribution to their community through projects or initiatives that help to make a better future for Australia. These projects have contributed environmentally, economically and/or socially to the local community and will benefit the next generation of Australians.

Max’s selection recognises his devotion to sustainable living within the community, in the establishment of Sustainable House Shoalhaven.

In 2002, Max and his wife moved from Sydney to Worrigee where they purchased land and built a state-of-the-art sustainable home featuring water tanks, solar hot water and quality building products that naturally heated and cooled the house.

Soon after their home was completed, with the support of the local council, schools and businesses, Max set about building Sustainable House Shoalhaven.

In its first year of opening in 2009, the house attracted over 4,000 visitors. Visitors to the house are invited to participate and engage in workshops, information tours, and events right throughout the year.

“The Sustainable House Shoalhaven aims to promote sustainable housing design, and inspire home buyers, renovators, and the housing industry, to adopt these practices help reduce their carbon footprint,” said Max.

Did you know? The last three local people to appear on the Nowra Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover were:

2009/10: Mollymook resident, Tina Broad, appeared on the cover under the theme Creative Australians: Inspiring our Communities. Tina was recognised for her contribution to the arts as the founder of community choir, The Glorious MUDSingers.

2008/09: Shoalhaven Heads resident, Greg Bishop was the cover hero for the Celebrating Australian Flavour cover theme, selected for his contribution in building the Shoalhaven Coast’s reputation as one of Australia’s premier wine regions.
