White Pages Covers Program
White Pages® recognises Debbie Beer’s fight against homelessness
May 5, 2011
Kalgoorlie resident, Debbie Beer has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Central and Eastern Yellow Pages® and White Pages® book which will be distributed throughout the Central and Eastern district of Western Australia from 7 May 2011.
Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages®, recognises the contribution of local residents in the community by featuring them on the cover of its books each year.
The theme for this year’s covers, Australians Creating a Better Future, recognises people throughout Australia who have made a positive contribution to their community through projects or initiatives that help to make a better future for Australia. These projects have contributed environmentally, economically and/or socially to the local community and will benefit the next generation of Australians.
Debbie’s selection recognises her commitment to helping and supporting the homeless youths in Kalgoorlie.
As the youth and family worker at Crossroads West Kalgoorlie Boulder Youth Accommodation Centre, Debbie has seen many young residents come through, seeking advice and assistance. Her role is to coordinate classes on independent living, to prepare and equip young people with the knowledge and capabilities required for life outside the centre.
Debbie’s passion for helping others is evident in the patience and dedication she shows with the youths, not only helping to provide essential skills but also assisting them to find affordable housing and employment opportunities. It is this commitment that has seen many of the centre’s youths leave as confident and independent individuals, who go on to build positive relationships with family, friends and employers.
“I believe every community member has the opportunity to change their fortunes. What we do at the Centre aims to provide the youths in the area with the skills that will help them get back on track. It’s so rewarding to see the potential they can reach at the end of our programs,” said Debbie.
Debbie’s commitment to her role sees her spending many nights and weekends to ensure the young people who attend the centre receive the best possible support that will see them regain stability within in the community.
