Mount Tambourine residents Bev and Geoff Buckley have been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Gold Coast White Pages® book which was distributed throughout the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Tambourine areas in June 2011.

Each year, Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages®, recognises the contribution of local residents in the community by featuring them on the cover of its books.

The theme for this year’s covers, Australians Creating a Better Future, recognises people throughout Australia who have made a positive contribution to their community through projects or initiatives that help to make a better future for Australia. These projects have contributed environmentally, economically and/or socially to the local community and will benefit the next generation of Australians.

Bev and Geoff’s selection recognises their success in regenerating the Mount Tambourine economy after opening The Green Shed, a local market for fresh, mostly organic fruit and vegetables held every Sunday morning.

For the past 10 years, The Green Shed has given local farmers an outlet to sell their produce and residents a chance to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables directly from local growers.

Three years after opening, The Green Shed began generating significant profits that have been channelled back into community projects including the commissioning of 12 chicken coops and the establishment of a community garden. Also a runaway success, the community garden is now at capacity.

“We think it is really important for communities to support their local producers. Not only does it help the local economy, but it is also really rewarding for everyone involved. To be recognised for this work is truly humbling and rewarding,” said Bev.

Did you know? The previous three local people to appear on the Gold Coast White Pages® cover were:

2010/11: The 2010/11 White Pages® featured Upper Coomera resident Ben Tullipan on the cover under the theme Courageous Australians. Ben courageously overcame injuries he sustained in the Bali bombings to assist fellow survivors of large scale disasters and local Gold Coast amputees.

2009/10: Mermaid Waters local Mariam Arcilla, appeared on the 2009/10 White Pages® cover under the theme Creative Australians: Inspiring our Communities. Mariam is the founder of tinygold, a not-for-profit artist run initiative that encourages members of the community to interact with local artists.

2008/09: North Tambourine residents Michael and Alla Ward graced the Celebrating Australian Flavour theme cover, acknowledged for their work running the award-winning Tambourine Mountain distillery.
