White Pages Covers Program
White Pages® gives the (green) thumbs-up to Toowoomba community garden founder, Mary Mountford
March 9, 2011
Toowoomba resident, Mary Mountford has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Toowoomba Yellow Pages® and White Pages® book which will be distributed to Toowoomba, Warwick, Stanthorpe, Goondiwindi, Inglewood, St George, Dinnanbandi districts and surrounding areas from 12 March 2011.
Each year, Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages®, recognises the contribution of local residents in the community by featuring them on the cover of its books.
The theme for this year’s covers, Australians Creating a Better Future, recognises people throughout Australia who have made a positive contribution to their community through projects or initiatives that help to make a better future for Australia. These projects have contributed environmentally, economically and/or socially to the local community and will benefit the next generation of Australians.
Mary’s selection recognises her work in helping establish the Toowoomba Community Organic Gardens Association (TCOGA).
As former President, now Vice-President of TCOGA, Mary has been working with her local community to promote the benefits of organic gardening and farming for many years.
In November 1996, Mary, with support from the Darling Down Natural Growers Group and other community members, founded the TCOGA organic community garden. Mary also initiated Adopt-a-Plot in 2009, a program that provides locals who don’t have space in their own backyards with an opportunity to produce their own organic fruit and vegetables in community gardens.
“The success of the Adopt-a-Plot project has proven how passionate people can be about sustainability when support is available. Volunteering with TCOGA is my passion and I am humbled to be recognised for my contribution,” said Mary.
Did you know? The last three local people to appear on the Toowoomba Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover were:
2010/11: Highfield resident, Jessica Watkins appeared on the cover of the Courageous Australians directory. At 15 months of age, Jessica was diagnosed with auto-immune hepatitis and by six, required a liver transplant. After waiting two years and surviving on a feeding tube 22 hours a day, a donor was found in 2008. At ten years old, Jessica is an inspiring young girl who has overcome significant adversity to help others like her.
2009/10: Yellow Pages® and White Pages® featured Toowoomba residents Damien Kamholtz and Rachel Price for the Creative Australians: Inspiring our Communities theme. They were selected for their innovative arts and environmental creative collective Play on Play (PoP) where they coordinated community based arts workshops.
2008/09: For the theme Celebrating Australian Flavour, Goondiwindi local Lori Mackay was recognised for drawing tourism to the region through the ‘Gourmet in Gundy’ food and wine festival.
