Rosevears resident, Sandra Murray has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Launceston Yellow Pages® and White Pages® book which will be distributed throughout Launceston and North Eastern Tasmania from 12 February 2011.

Each year, Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages®, recognises the contribution of local residents in the community by featuring them on the cover of its books.

The theme for this year’s covers, Australians Creating a Better Future, recognises people throughout Australia who have made a positive contribution to their community through projects or initiatives that help to make a better future for Australia. These projects have contributed environmentally, economically and/or socially to the local community and will benefit the next generation of Australians.

Sandra’s selection recognises her passion to share and promote sustainable living alternatives with Launceston residents so that they can reduce their carbon footprint.

As the Launceston facilitator of Transition Town, a global response to climate change and peak oil, Sandra helps bring local people together to instigate community-led sustainability programs throughout Launceston and northern Tasmania. One of the initiatives she has worked on is the establishment of community gardens in Launceston suburbs which support residents wanting to grow their own organic produce.

“It is important to look after our communities now for future generations and I’m humbled to be recognised by Sensis as an Australian Creating a Better Future. I believe that people need support to make small changes in their lives that help make a big difference in the community,” said Sandra.

In addition to her local work, Sandra was one of two Tasmanians selected to be trained by former US Vice-President Al Gore in 2009 to deliver local presentations on climate change.

Did you know? The last three local people to appear on the Launceston Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover were:

2010/11: Launceston resident Esther Rubenach graced the 2010/11 Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover under the Courageous Australians theme for her work with the Break O’ Day State Emergency Services. Esther constantly demonstrates great courage attending a number of life threatening incidents.

2009/10: West Launceston resident Elizabeth Bennet featured on the 2009/10 Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover under the theme Creative Australians: Inspiring our Communities. Elizabeth was chosen for her dedication to community arts through the Interweave Arts Association, Centre Stage Theatre Company and teaching drama at Launceston College.

2008/09: Van Diemen Aquaculture in Rowella was selected for the 2008/09 Celebrating Australian Flavour theme – the environmentally sustainable company, which grows and sells ocean trout and Atlantic salmon, has positively influenced the perception of fish farming in the wider community.
