White Pages® celebrates Louise Mackay on Newcastle cover
June 14, 2012
Fronting the cover of this year’s Newcastle White Pages® and Yellow Pages® is Hamilton East resident Louise Mackay, recognised for her efforts helping people with cancer.
Louise is recognised under the theme, A Helping Hand, The Aussie Way, for launching the first ever Newcastle Fashion Week in 2009 to raise funds for Cancer Council NSW.
Diagnosed with leukaemia in 2005, Louise discovered a love of fundraising and event organising during her three years of treatment.
Through her fashion shows, Louise has raised money to help purchase laptops for haematology patients. Having felt isolated from her friends during her own treatment, Louise knew that providing cancer patients with a computer and internet access would instantly brighten their day.
Now in remission and an advocate for young people with cancer, Louise spends her spare time melding fashion with fundraising and helping others.
With Newcastle Fashion Week now a firm fixture on local fashionistas’ calendars, Louise is steadily building an event with a strong community focus at its heart – helping locals with cancer during the toughest battle of their lives.
“Cancer doesn’t discriminate and I don’t think fashion should either. Newcastle Fashion Week not only helps local designers and boutiques, but also raises awareness around issues facing young adults with cancer, while also funding research to improve survival rates,” Louise said.
“This recognition is completely surprising and I hope inspires young people with cancer to stay positive during their treatment.”
