Upton Hill residents, Grant and Suzanne Taresch have been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Wangaratta Yellow Pages® and White Pages® book which was distributed to Wangaratta, Benalla, Seymour, Yarrawonga, Wallan and Mansfield in February 2011.

Each year, Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages®, recognises the contribution of local residents in the community by featuring them on the cover of its books.

The theme for this year’s covers, Australians Creating a Better Future, recognises people throughout Australia who have made a positive contribution to their community through projects or initiatives that help to make a better future for Australia. These projects have contributed environmentally, economically and/or socially to the local community and will benefit the next generation of Australians.

Grant and Suzanne’s selection recognises their efforts to make Elgo Estate one of Victoria’s most sustainable wineries.

Over the past 10 years, Grant and Suzanne have installed a self funded wind turbine, implemented a water recycling program and dedicated countless hours fencing off creeks, to prevent soil erosion and land degradation on their winery. These initiatives have contributed to a saving of over 400 tonnes of damaging carbon emissions emitted by the estate annually.

The Tareschs have also overseen the replanting of over 10,000 trees to help revegetate the area and increase the native wildlife habitat. They are committed to supporting the Wangaratta economy by exclusively employing staff from the local community.

“Suzanne and I feel it was important to implement environmentally friendly programs to set a benchmark in the wine industry, and encourage other wineries to do the same. It is a privilege to be recognised for what we do and our commitment to our initiatives,” said Grant.

Did you know? The previous three local people to appear on the Wangaratta Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover were:

2010/11: Kilmore East residents Kevin and Rhonda Butler featured on the directory cover under the theme Courageous Australians. They were recognised for their efforts in establishing Blaze Aid, a not-for-profit organisation to assist all Black Saturday victims with fencing on their properties.

2009/10: Seymour Forge resident and local blacksmith, Steve Wolfe appeared on the current Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover under the theme Creative Australians: Inspiring our Communities. Steve mentors the students of Seymour Technical High School, St Mary’s College Seymour, Seymour Special School and clients from Seymour Mental Illness Fellowship to create public artworks.

2008/09: Olive producer Maureen Titcumb graced the cover of the Celebrating Australian Flavour theme directory for her work as President of the Milawa Gourmet Region Association.
