Hobart’s scenery is an inspirational backdrop for the local arts scene, with the city continuing to produce high quality music and art that rivals the nation’s best. So when it came time to choose a face to feature on the cover of the 2009/10 Hobart Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directory under this year’s theme, Creative Australians: Inspiring Our Communities, which recognises significant arts contributions to the community, Sensis was spoilt for choice.

Gracing the cover of the Hobart Yellow Pages® and White Pages®  directory is Jenny Chapman, the founding musical director of the Choir of High Hopes Hobart. Jenny works alongside vocal coach Helen Todd to run the choir, which consists of more than 100 members who have experienced disadvantage in some way. The Choir of High Hopes Hobart was formed in October 2007 with the support of community volunteers, Reclink Australia and Melbourne's Choir of Hard Knocks founder, Jonathon Welch.

Jenny's aim for the choir is to provide a support network for members, and in turn, help them to reconnect with their community through music. The choir members, many of whom have experienced challenges such as disability, drug dependence and family problems, have performed a number of concerts including a sell out show at the Theatre Royal and other concerts to help raise awareness for homelessness, human rights and mental health issues.

"The choir gives members a great opportunity to voice their feelings and experiences to a broader audience. There's nothing like the power of music to break down social barriers and help people build their self confidence. It's such an exciting initiative and I'm so proud of what we've achieved so far," said Jenny.

The Choir of High Hopes Hobart recently performed at the Mercure Hotel for its inaugural annual general meeting and completed a tour of Saint Helen's and Bicheno in November 2009.
