White Pages Covers Program
Creative Australian, Adelaide White Pages, Anthony Steel
October 13, 2009
Adelaide is renowned across Australia as being a festival city, hosting numerous arts and cultural events each year, so when it came time to choose a face to feature on the cover of the 2009/10 Adelaide White Pages® directory under this year’s theme Creative Australians: Inspiring Our Communities, Sensis was spoilt for choice.
There was one prominent arts individual however, that stood out from the strong list of nominees. Gracing the Adelaide White Pages® cover is influential arts figure Anthony Steel AM, who has inspired an appreciation of the arts in Adelaide for over four decades, through his involvement with many high-profile cultural festivals, particularly the renowned Adelaide Festival.
Anthony was the first general manager of the Adelaide Festival Centre and the artistic director for five Festivals during the 70s and 80s. For these achievements, Anthony was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1978. He has managed various arts organisations around the world and returned home to apply his experience to running major events such as the Sydney Festival, Brisbane Music Festival and the National Festival of Australian Theatre in Canberra.
More recently, Anthony has worked in South Australia with the Meryl Tankard Australian Dance Theatre, Barossa Music Festival, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and State Opera of South Australia.
“Having worked in the arts on four continents, it’s good to have had the chance to come home and make some further contribution to the arts in this state.”
In 2007, Anthony received the Premier’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his cultural contributions to the South Australian community.
Anthony replaces Stephan Knoll on the cover of the Adelaide White Pages® directory. Stephan appeared last year as part of the ‘Celebrating Australian Flavour’ theme.
The 2009/10 Adelaide White Pages® is the first to feature a new-look format, which sees Anthony’s image used across the entire directory cover. The new format will be implemented across all White Pages® and co-bound Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories throughout the country.
With the 2009/10 White Pages® directory commenced distribution on Saturday 1 August 2009. Residents and businesses are encouraged to recycle their old directories which in most areas can be recycled as part of normal kerbside recycling service. People can log onto www.recyclingnearyou.com.au to find out about recycling services available in their local area.
