Each year, locals are featured on the covers of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories in recognition of the contributions they make to their communities. Under the theme Courageous Australians, this year directories producer, Sensis, is recognising courageous people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to overcome adversity and help others in their time of need.

After receiving nominations from community members for the annual honour, Darwin,  Wanguri and Palmerston residents, Morgan Wise, Tiernan Anderson and Andrew Demetriou have been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Northern Territory directory which is distributed to Northern Territory and surrounding areas.

In February 2009, Morgan, Tiernan and Andrew went for a swim at Rapid Creek, a popular spot where many young locals visit. Following a recent heavy downpour the trio noticed the banks were swollen and decided they would leave if it became too dangerous.

After travelling down the first bend in the creek, they saw a young boy whose foot was tangled on a rope. The best way to save him was to bravely crawl back though the shallows near the bank where they eventually managed to free him.

Andrew and Morgan conducted CPR while Tiernan called for help. The trio carried the young boy to waiting police and paramedics, but tragically he didn’t survive.

“When we were trying to rescue him we kept getting swept away from the strong current, which made it tough to get to the tree where he was caught. We all knew we had to try to help him, but unfortunately we weren’t able to save him,” said the boys.

In recognition of their courageous actions, the trio were awarded the Pride of Australia Outstanding Bravery Medal.

Distribution of Northern Territory Yellow Pages® and White Pages® is planned to start on 22 May 2010 and it will take approximately six weeks for the directories to be delivered to all households.

Sensis encourages residents and businesses to recycle their old directories. In most areas, Yellow Pages® and White Pages® can be recycled as part of normal kerbside recycling services. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au to find out about recycling services in your area.
