White Pages Covers Program
Courageous Australian Steve Sayers to feature on Central Coast's Yellow Pages® and White Pages®
May 27, 2010
Each year, locals are featured on the covers of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories in recognition of the contributions they make to their communities. Under the theme Courageous Australians, this year directories producer, Sensis, is recognising courageous people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to overcome adversity and help others in their time of need.
After receiving nominations from community members for the annual honour, Saratoga resident, Steve Sayers has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Central Coast directory which is distributed to the Central Coast of NSW.
As a seasoned athlete, Steve is well known in his community for mentoring locals who are training for long distance running by providing ongoing support, advice and encouragement. Since saving the life of a teenage boy, he is now also recognised for his bravery.
When jogging with his son in May 2008, he witnessed a collision between a car and a trail bike. The collision instantly caused the bike to explode, engulfing its 17-year-old rider in flames and throwing Steve within five feet of the crash.
When Steve reached the screaming rider he was completely covered in flames. His initial effort to extinguish the fire was unsuccessful but upon remembering of a nearby puddle, he managed to wipe some mud on the teenager and carry him to the water to put out the fire.
Steve bravely stayed with the teenager for 40 minutes, until help arrived. Without his courageous effort, the teenager would almost certainly have lost his life.
“When I saw the collision my first reaction was to run, but as I heard the screams of the boy my instincts kicked in and I rushed to his aid to find him completely covered in fire. Luckily there was the puddle nearby to smother the flames,” said Steve.
Steve was awarded a NSW Fire Brigades Commissioner’s Commendation for his heroic efforts.
Distribution of Central Coast Yellow Pages® and White Pages® is planned to start on 29 May 2010 and it will take approximately six weeks for the directories to be delivered to all households.
Sensis encourages residents and businesses to recycle their old directories. In most areas, Yellow Pages® and White Pages® can be recycled as part of normal kerbside recycling services. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au to find out about recycling services in your area.
