Each year, locals are featured on the covers of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories in recognition of the contributions they make to their communities. Under the theme Courageous Australians, this year directories producer, Sensis, is recognising courageous people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to overcome adversity and help others in their time of need.

After receiving nominations from community members for the annual honour, Port Headland resident, Mick Lanagan has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Great Northern directory which is distributed to Broome, Derby, Halls Creek, Port Hedland and Carnavron.

Mick Lanagan has devoted most of his life to assisting rural communities in Western Australia as a nurse, St Johns Ambulance member, Royal Flying Doctor Service volunteer and operator of a bush clinic in Sandfire. After battling bone cancer in his spine for many years, Mick courageously makes every day count as he attends many life-threatening emergencies and road accidents.

In March 2007, Mick’s bravery was demonstrated when he was the first to arrive on the scene of a horrific road accident where 13 people were injured, five critically, after their four-wheel drive rolled just north of Sandfire. Mick worked for three hours in scorching 47 degree heat until further assistance arrived.

Mick’s skills were also tested during a road crash where a woman was trapped inside a car that was leaking petrol in 2001. Despite the risk to his own life, he crawled into the vehicle through the rear window, stabilised the woman and cared for her until the fire and rescue crew were able to cut her free from the car.

“I really admire the work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and medical personnel, especially in remote areas. I see myself as just a helping hand to the enormous work they do. To be recognised on this year’s directory cover for my work is a real honour,” said Mick.

Distribution of Great Northern Yellow Pages® and White Pages® is planned to start on 8 May 2010 and it will take approximately six weeks for the directories to be delivered to all households.

Sensis encourages residents and businesses to recycle their old directories. In most areas, Yellow Pages® and White Pages® can be recycled as part of normal kerbside recycling services. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au to find out about recycling services in your area.
