Each year, locals are featured on the covers of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories in recognition of the contributions they make to their communities. Under the theme Courageous Australians, this year directories producer, Sensis, is recognising courageous people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to overcome adversity and help others in their time of need.

After receiving nominations from community members for the annual honour, Mildura resident, Merryl Whyte has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Mildura directory which is distributed to Balranald, Hopetoun, Mildura, Ouyen and Swan Hill.

After suffering from postnatal depression (PND) after the birth of her third child, Merryl has given hope to many mothers who suffer from the condition through the establishment of the first PND support network in Sunraysia.

When Merryl was diagnosed with PND, her illness was made more challenging as there were no peer support networks available to her. Merryl’s ability to courageously overcome her personal adversity saw her launch the Sunraysia Postnatal Depression Support Network (SPNDSN) in June 2009.

SPNDSN offers critical support for new mothers in the community living with PND, providing advocacy, one-on-one peer support, access to resources and monthly meetings for local families affected by the illness.

“I want to provide mothers and families with the support I didn’t have. It is important that new mums know that they are not alone,” said Merryl.

Merryl hopes to continue to keep postnatal depression on the agenda, providing improved assistance to families in the region.

Distribution of Mildura Yellow Pages® and White Pages® is planned to start on 24 April 2010 and it will take approximately six weeks for the directories to be delivered to all households.

Sensis encourages residents and businesses to recycle their old directories. In most areas, Yellow Pages® and White Pages® can be recycled as part of normal kerbside recycling services. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au to find out about recycling services in your area.

Did you know? The past three local people who appeared on the Mildura Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover were:

2009/10: Ross Lake of Mildura featured on the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® cover under the theme ‘Creative Australians: Inspiring our Communities’ for his voluntary contribution in the coordination and organisation of a number of festivals throughout the year for the Mildura region. The festivals are aimed at not just entertaining people, but to introduce a broad range of arts to the isolated community.

2008/09: Mildura resident, Stefano de Pieri graced the 2008/09 Yellow Pages® and White Pages® ‘Celebrating Australian Flavour’ theme cover for his many contributions to the Mildura community, and mostly for his endeavours to establish the Mildura as a produce and wine rich district. He has done this through the inclusion of many local produce into his cooking gat the Grand Hotel.

2007/08: Clive Crouch from Nhill appeared on the 2007/08 Yellow Pages® and White Pages® ‘Champions of our Community’ cover for his work as a grassroots environmentalist, where he has helped save the Little Desert from being cleared and has also worked on the Grampians and Wimmera Wildlife Recovery Nest Box Projects.
