White Pages Covers Program
Courageous Australian Greg Hutchins to appear on Warrnambool's Yellow Pages® and White Pages®
April 22, 2010
Each year, locals are featured on the covers of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories in recognition of the contributions they make to their communities. Under the theme Courageous Australians, this year directories producer, Sensis, is recognising courageous people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to overcome adversity and help others in their time of need.
After receiving nominations from community members for the annual honour, Portland resident, Greg Hutchins has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Warrnambool directory which is distributed to Camperdown, Casterton, Edenhope, Hamilton, Portland and Warrnambool.
Racetrack driver, Greg Hutchins showed his courage when he went to the aid of a fellow race car driver to rescue him from a burning car.
In 2008, during a Southern 500 Speedway event, Greg’s car had crashed in a previous race and was waiting for the following race to finish before returning to the pits when he saw a car spin out on the track and stall. The driver of the car tried to restart the engine, not knowing that his vehicle was leaking fuel, which instantly exploded, engulfing the vehicle in flames.
Greg immediately ran towards the inferno to the rescue of the trapped man. Risking his own life and safety, he pulled off the harness to free the driver and dragged him from the burning car. His quick thinking and bravery helped them both escape the explosion unharmed.
Greg’s actions have resulted in the Speedway Association making significant modifications and improvements to the safety of race car drivers.
“I’m glad the sport is thinking more about the safety of drivers. It is such a fast sport and one wrong move can flip or spin the car out of control from even the most experienced drivers. Safety of the driver is very important and I’m just pleased to know something good has resulted from a bad accident,” said Greg.
For Greg’s rescue efforts, he was awarded a local certificate of appreciation for Going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty and Bravery and Commitment to Personal Safety. Greg has also been inducted as a life member of the Southern 500 Speedway.
Distribution of Warrnambool Yellow Pages® and White Pages® is planned to start on 24 April 2010 and it will take approximately six weeks for the directories to be delivered to all households.
Sensis encourages residents and businesses to recycle their old directories. In most areas, Yellow Pages® and White Pages® can be recycled as part of normal kerbside recycling services. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au to find out about recycling services in your area.
