Each year, locals are featured on the covers of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories in recognition of the contributions they make to their communities. Under the theme Courageous Australians, this year directories producer, Sensis, is recognising courageous people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to overcome adversity and help others in their time of need.

After receiving nominations from community members for the annual honour, Bordertown resident, Gordon Creaser has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s South East directory which is distributed to Mt Gambier, Naracoorte, Robe and Bordertown.

Gordon Creaser has been serving his local community for over 40 years as a member of the Bordertown SES. He has spent much of his volunteer time saving lives from vehicle road accidents, controlling storm damaged properties, conducting land search and rescue and attending to flood, rail and farm accidents.

In 1988, Gordon was called to a rescue operation where a large diesel fuel tanker had jack-knifed and rolled into a tree. The driver was trapped under the tanker that was pouring diesel onto him. Gordon was quick to pull a large piece of bark from a nearby tree to shield the driver’s face from the toxic fuel until further help arrived.

Gordon has shown tremendous courage in all the rescue efforts he’s attended, often risking his own life to save those of others. Another example of his bravery was when he helped in pulling a man from a burning car as a packet of rifle bullets were exploding in the back seat.

The contribution Gordon has made to his local community was recognised when he was named the 2009 Tatiara Volunteer of the Year.

“I’ve never thought of the work I do with the SES as heroic or courageous, it’s always been part of the role, you do what you can to help others. It’s been great to be recognised on this year’s directory cover and to represent the work that all SES volunteers do,” said Gordon.

Distribution of  South East Yellow Pages® and White Pages® is planned to start on 6 March 2010 and it will take approximately six weeks for the directories to be delivered to all households.

Sensis encourages residents and businesses to recycle their old directories. In most areas, Yellow Pages® and White Pages® can be recycled as part of normal kerbside recycling services. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au to find out about recycling services in your area.
